Volume 1 Prologue

Assassin Reincarnates

I’m at a seat in a passenger plane. I just finished my work and am about to return to Japan.

Assassins exist only in fiction.

That would be common sense for the vast majority of people.

However, it is beyond consideration.

There is no means of eliminating a target that’s as quick and effective as assassination.

That’s why there are assassins like me.

“… The last job was finished as usual.”

I retired from the assassination business today.

I was called the best assassin of my time, but even if I made the president of a certain country die of ‘illness’, I can’t beat old age, so I decided to retire today.

Once, I taught at the facility where I learned the skills needed to be an assassin.

Both the teacher and the student require extremely sophisticated and specialized skills and a firm mouth that never reveals information.

Not many people can do that.

The people in those facility raises talented children to become assassins like me.

Unfortunately, I will have to keep that story for another time. Something urgent came up.

The passenger plane shook greatly with an explosion, and the altitude of the passenger plane was steadily decreasing.

“It’s understandable to want to dispose of unusable tools to seal their mouths, but to think they did all this…”

‘I’ve gone old, I wasn’t able to predict this….’

I got up from my seat and ran to the side where the panicked occupants were.

I then hacked the cockpit room door and broke inside. Of course, there were people who got in my way, but I had them fall asleep.

The heads of the captain and deputy captain were blown up in the cockpit room.

They were dead.

Assassins are required to have a wide variety of skills. I can even fly a passenger plane, but the console was blown up with the captain and deputy captain’s head.

“I’ve ended many people’s lives. I thought it would be my turn someday, but I didn’t think that I’ll have a grave so grandiose.”

I closed my eyes.

In any situation, I will do my best even if i only have a 0.01% chance of survival.

I’ll mobilize my experience and knowledge to find the best move.

There is still one thing I can do.

I opened my eyes.

The altitude of the plane is going down steadily.

Even if it is impossible to land this airliner well, I can survive alone.

“It’s going down faster than I expected.”

I saw a fighter aircraft loaded with missiles approaching at the window.

The passenger plane I’m in is nearing a city.

If nothing is done, it will crash into the city and cause great damage.

Before that, I’m going to make something out of wood.

I would take some tens of seconds to finish what I was making, but it seems that the man in the fighter aircraft did something. It didn’t take long to find out. A missile was launched.

It’s a pity, I could’ve lived if only I finished.

Again, I closed my eyes.

Air-to-air missile, AIM-92

Even the plane I was in would be reduced to nothingness.

The process would be so fast that I wouldn’t even be able to feel the pain.

….. I’m sorry.

I was made a tool, I killed my emotions and was betrayed even though I had just faithfully fulfilled his orders.

Even if I was told to do a ridiculously hard task, I would obediently comply.

Trampling on that loyalty of mine made me question the organization and what I have been doing in my life for the first time.

If I ever have a second life, I would live for myself, not for someone else.

If I use my skill, knowledge, and experience for myself, I’m sure…

With that in mind, I opened my eyes and continued to take the necessary steps to survive until the last second.

I woke up.

What I first saw was a temple.

It resembles the Parthenon. It’s an old stone temple.

Let’s first analyze the current situation.

Is this a dream?

“No, it’s not. What you’re seeing here is reality. You were the number one assassin of your time, but you were assassinated because of your naivety.”

A woman with white hair wearing a white dress smiled and spoke. No, not only her hair and clothes were white, but her skin and eyes were white too.

She’s beautiful above all.

An existence that deviates from human beings. Every element of her body is in the golden ratio and is perfect.

But what’s with the frank tone?

“… Hmm, could you explain this?”

“I invited your dead soul. By the way, I’m a goddess.”

“Well, do goddesses call the dead and chat with them? If that’s true, then considering the number of dead people, you must have a real lot of time to spare, or are you specifically calling me?”

“That’s right. Normally, we just cleanse what’s in the soul. We’re not so free either.”

I got a bad feeling this.

From a while ago, I was trying to confirm her authenticity by the movement of her facial muscles, intonation of voice, sweating, and such factors.

However, the goddess’s movements are so natural that it feels unnatural. I feel like as if she’s acting, and I also feel like she knows all the points I am trying to read.

I can do something similar, but it can’t be so perfect. Rather, it is impossible for humans to achieve that level in acting.

That very fact convinces me that the being right in front of me is not a human.

“If so, let me know why you called me.”

I had so many questions, but what she said next relieved me of some of them.

“You’re smart. You have a choice. One is to cleanse your soul and be reborn as a stranger. The other is to reincarnate in another world, having your knowledge and experience intact after accepting my request. “

The former option is to become no longer me, but another person.

In the latter case, it would be synonymous with the continuation of this life in a sense.

It’s fascinating that life lasts.

I lived as a tool to kill people, and in the end, I regretted it because I was betrayed by the organization and died.

However, considering the reason why this goddess and others chose me, there was only one answer, which is not very desirable.

“Who do you want dead?”

“You’re quick and helpful, just as I expected. Well then, assassinate the hero in a fantasy world of swords and magic. The deadline is eighteen years after you’re born.”

“A world of swords and magic? A hero? Isn’t that just fantasy?”

Right after I asked, information about the world flowed into my brain.

The structure of the world, the definition of magic, the culture of that era, the level of technology, the hero…

‘I see, this is different from my world.’

“Isn’t he/she a hero? Why would I need to kill him?”

“16 years after you’re born, the hero would’ve defeated the Demon King and saved the world, but he’ll then proceed to use his power for his own self-interest confusing the world. He’ll become something far worse than the Demon King. 18 years after you’re born, the world will be destroyed, so please, kill the hero. Isn’t the hero unnecessary after defeating the Demon King?”

At that point, I somehow felt connection with this hero.

“If he didn’t cause any particular mischief, I would’ve let him be, but… Hump!”

In that world, there is magic, and some people there have physical abilities far superior to those on Earth.

The level of technology there is between the Middle Ages and the early modern period, however, magic there is abnormally developed.

‘And I’ll just have to kill the hero?”

“A hero who has already killed the Demon King is no longer needed, so I will dispose of him, but wouldn’t I, after that, be no longer needed?”

“If you don’t want to do this, choose the other option I gave earlier. Don’t worry that much though, I’ll support you.”

She puts her hand on my chin and smiles bewitchingly.

“I chose an assassin because neither a warrior, a knight, nor a magician have a chance on beating the hero on a straight on fight.”

“So you’re saying that I have to kill a ridiculously strong monster that is in the form of a human?”

The reason was engraved in the knowledge given earlier.

There is a limit to what humans can do in that world. A hero is a person who can greatly exceed that limit, and is overwhelmingly superior to everyone else since he/she’s born.

The goddesses cannot make special cases other than the hero, and there can only be one hero at the same time.

There is nothing that can be done if the hero goes out of control. No one can beat the hero in a “Battle”.

That’s why assassination is the only option to go with.

“I understood a lot of things from the information I got from you. However, I can’t kill the hero. I need a body with performance that is close to being the strongest.”

“Yeah, I’ll cooperate in that area. I’ll give you the theoretically strongest specs within the framework of humans, and I’ll let you choose skills that should’ve been random.”

Countless skills come to my mind.

In the world of swords and magic, a person is given up to five skills at birth.

They’re to randomly get 1 to 5 skills.

It’s great to be able to choose them freely.

I will be advantageous by not only choosing the best skills suitable for me, but by also making the skills have synergy.

“Why did you give me the option to choose skills?”

“I didn’t want you to be too weak. Anyways, I’ll give you three days to study the skills and choose five. That is, if you accept my request. “

“I’ll take it. I still want to continue my life. Please let me confirm some things first. Based on the information I received earlier, you cannot interfere excessively with the world, but it is not the case to reincarnate me from another world. Is it? “

“Yeah, it’s safe. I happened to be replenished of my resources from another world, so I can make your memories and experience intact, and make your body ‘special’ because someone with a normal body can’t beat the hero no matter what. “

An explanation easy to understand, huh…

Hm, I’ll ask more questions.

“Next question, Can I get rid of the hero as soon as I’m ready?”

“Oh, that’s no good. At least wait until the hero kills the Demon King. The Demon King can only be killed by the hero, and killing the hero too early will result in destroying the world.”

“Next question, how many souls did you reincarnate with memories intact?”

It’s unlikely that only I will be reincarnated with memory to assassinate the hero.

If I was her, I would prepare a lot of pawns to increase the probability as much as possible.

“Well, you’re a well-known assassin, and as of now, you’re the only one. I can’t have that many special cases.”

As of ‘now’?

‘I’ll keep that in mind.’

“Last question, If I can save the world without killing the hero, may I do that?”

“Of course. I just want you to save the world. If you can save the world without killing the hero, that’s fine. That is, if you can.”

The goddess laughed as she answered.

I didn’t have any intention of asking her more questions.

“Alright, I’ll reincarnate in that world of swords and magic, but I have one request. I’d like to be reincarnated to a wealthy family, and I’d like to have a good environment to train myself.”

“Oh, don’t you worry about that, you’ll be reincarnated to the family of the best assassins in that world, and you’re to to take over the assassin aristocrat family Tuatha Dé. After you have decided on your skills, you will be reincarnated.”

The goddess then disappeared

‘Aha…’

Even in my next life, I’ll still assassinate.

I’ll also have the hardest assassination target of my life.

Earlier, I said that I will live for myself if I ever had a second life, so it’s quite ironic to be someone else’s tool right from the beginning.

I’m not going to complain though.

After I assassinate the hero, the deal will be done. With just one kill, I’ll break free from all constraints.

‘This time, I’ll follow own will and seek out to obtain what is called…’

I smiled.

‘Happiness.’
